Q: Why did you decide to write On My Own?

A: This book grows out of my own personal experience as a woman but also as a psychotherapist in private practice with over twenty years of experience working with women of all ages and stages of life whose stories about finding themselves alone, and the shame and fear that many of them experience—influenced in part by their early environments but just as emphatically by the culture—prevent them from believing that they can be fully realized as women alone and in relationship.
At the same time, I observed a trend of more and more women choosing to be on their own—despite their fears. The New York Times reported in January 2007 that 51% of women in this country are now living without a spouse. An enormous social shift is underway.
